Coolhunting
Coolhunting.com is a blog created in 2003 for global ideas on design, technology, art, and culture. Maintained by a group of editors and contributors, this site provides daily updates on these topics. When visited, one will see that the site provides numerous images and videos as well as informative posts to describe a new product or design. The blog presents multiple tags and tabs to locate more specific topics of interest. Advertising is a major aspect of this blog. Specific tactics are used through the layout of this ad (i.e. advertisements at the top of the page, the right sidebar, and frequently at the bottom of the pages). The location of these ads are consistent in that they are always in the same place, each time one goes to the blog. Consistency is an important tactic used in advertising. Does the regular placement of these ads increase the likelihood of them being noticed? Is there another style of advertising that would be more effective on this type of website? Are there any other interesting possible advertising tactics being used on this blog?

To answer Heather's questions, I think the consistency in the placement of the ads makes it less effective. One the more we see something in the exact same context, the less of an impact it has on us, we adjust to it, and then ignore it eventually. I think the most effective advertising on this website is the photos and writings about the new trendy items they are are presenting. What better advertisement is there than that? I must say, the website does seem a little too busy for my liking. There's too much on the that first page. Could the set up of the page be improved at all for better advertising?
ReplyDeleteCool Hunting is definitely a more mature blog compared to something like Candy Blog in the essence that its main color is a business-like gray, and its integrated ads are for luxury cars. Contradictory to Anton, I believe that the repetitive placement of ads creates a constant reminder for the viewer, especially when the ad is built right in to the graphics of the site, causing someone to glance over to the ad thinking that its part of the written blog. I like how Cool Hunting highlights design, concerts, and technology, covering a vast array of news that could easily attract almost everyone.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the setup of the blog. It is rather busy. Maybe if there were different links that lead to interesting advertisements that would help to make the website a little less crowded.
ReplyDeleteThe website definitely seems to have that mature feel to it. Its general appearance seems more refined than some of the past blogs. It also gives off a sort of artsy vibe based on the types of articles it has. It was sort of interesting how they chose to repeat the advertisements along the right side of the page every so often as you scroll down. However, that does make the add a bit busy at times so they would've tried to provide the links in a more effective way.
ReplyDeleteI think this blog is a lot more appealing because it has a more modern feel than candyblog, like you guys said. It's very catchy right at the top because they have the three big pictures about their topics and you have to scroll over them for more information about what the picture/article is actually of, making the site more interactive. I noticed that you can tweet about the article or "like" it on facebook which is an awesome way of advertising through social networks. I agree that the repetition of the ads is actually beneficial because repetition leads to remembrance. In one of their articles about the headphones I noticed they put in "good songs to listen to" for certain occasions with the headphones which is advertising those artists/ iTunes.
ReplyDeleteCool Hunting to me seems to be a pretty cool website. I agree with the rest of you, this site does have a professional look to it with a blank white background. It is at the same time very catchy in terms pictures they choose on their home-page. It is also pretty organized and interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the setup is really busy. It makes the blog almost uninviting and not as fun and easy to look at and explore. The blog almost has too much stuff going on at once. With all the pictures, words and links it can be a little overwhelming.
ReplyDeletethe blog does offer the different types of categories however which makes it helpful to find certain things but they could put a search bar to search advertisments and make the home page less crowed. I agree with everyone else that this background makes a more sophisticated and mature blog possibly for older adults looking for certain products
ReplyDeleteI definitely like the snazzy, artsy feel of the site. Intriguing pictures are a great way to catch a reader's eye. There are a lot of pictures, but I think they had to the exctiement and aren't necessarily overwhelming. Wow, okay so I tried to scroll down to the bottom of the website to look at information stuff and the articles kept refreshing. There are so many! I personally like the site!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Leighann completely on the fact that the artsy feel of the site is very intriguing. That was the first thing I noticed and also is my favorite aspect of the blog. The pictures of the designs they use are very creative and eye catching which I really like. They use every day objects in really cool ways to photograph them. The only thing I didn't really care for were the Tweets on the side, they were kind of confusing and irrelevant to me.
ReplyDeleteCoolhunting to me seems very sophisticated and is definitely for viewers who are older. The color schemes are very plain so i feel like if there were more colors than it would stand out to me more. However, the site is very organized and easy to navigate. I like how the videos are all the way down the left side of page and its title and description lets you know exactly what you will be seeing. The pictures are very eye catching and it attracts my attention right off. I do agree though with Brittney that the Tweets on the side were distracting and confusing to me also. This blog is a good way to advertise and is also very creative.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Taylor, about how Coolhunting gives off a sophisticated vibe. It seems like the audience would be artists, and people of that nature. I like how on the right side you can pick different categories, so people can directly go to what they are interested in. I found it interesting that they have an iPad app, which makes it accessible to more people. It seems like Coolhunting is also involved in most of the social networking websites, which is really good for advertising.
ReplyDeleteI found this blog to be busy as well, seemed a little hard to navigate in the sense that there's so much on each page that you don't really know how to get to what you want to look at at first. That being said, the blog is still somewhat organized with different tabs and such. I enjoyed the fact that its a design/tech blog because being an engineering student I will have to look at different designs of different things and incorporate tech into it as well. Interesting blog, just wish it wasn't so busy.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is probably my favorite one among the blogs we saw. Firstly, it is well organized, the website design is simple but meaningful at every single detail. It gives me a feeling that the blog is pretty mature and contains a lot of business value. Compare the blog what we discussed before, this one is more focused on the aesthetic value of some commercials, products, designs. As the blog's name captured, "cool hunting", this blog tells its audience the newest, fashion, cool stuffs all over the world. In this way, the blog is probably targeted on the younger generations or those who interested in arts. I found the tile part with an abstract but colorful painting is very attractive and meaningful. The picture seems to present a man thinking of something, with his cheek towards the audience. The designers probably use this to convey their overall idea of attracting people to find and observe colorful and interesting things in life.
ReplyDeleteAs a lover of art, design, and technology, I was immediately drawn to this site. I think the structure of the site was very formal and user friendly. I feel however that being a site about art and design, the layout of the site could have been a little more sporadic and in itself a piece of art with its own unique design. It is often difficult to find new art, and it is always exciting to see new designs and new technologies and this site is a way to find these new advances.
