The blog we’ve chosen is Adverblog, a blog dedicated to analyzing advertising ideas. The blog has been around since 2003 and has many examples of creative advertising campaigns. The front page has a comprehensive news feed with links to blogs on each individual story.
We thought this blog was particularly interesting because it not only has ad campaigns from this country but from others as well. For example, posted on April 6th was the Mexican Red Cross’s Fundraising campaign. Were there any entries that you found particularly interesting? Why? Do you think the blog has a good variety of sources?
What's going on here?
ReplyDeleteAdverblog is trying to promote different styles of advertising so that people who are looking at them will be interested in the product or the project/fundraiser thats being introduced. I thought the Mexican Red Cross Fundraiser for 2011 was the most interesting to me because they focus on finding ways of helping with natural disasters. They also found a fun way of collecting money by using claw machines that had dolls in them. Each time money was put into the machines, that money was going towards the Red Cross. I think this blog had a good variety of sources because each of them had a different way of putting their advertisment out there, whether it be a claw machine, a YouTube video, etc. When you first open the blog, where do your eyes gravitate towards first?
ReplyDeleteWhat I like most about this blog is the how much the posts show a variety of different ads and marketing campaigns ranging from so many different topics around the world. When I first opened the blog, what caught my attention were the bright colors of the title bars. I really like how the creator, Martina Zavagno, has a detailed description of his blog for users not only to post advertisements, but to learn why he started it in the first place. I think he made these topics stand out in color for the purpose of drawing your eye to them to read what he has to say about his creation. Adverblog is mostly viewed by Europeans over Americans and major companies including Nike and Yahoo which I also found interesting. At first I was a little confused on how to read the comments from contributors, do you think there are any specific ways this blog site could be improved?
ReplyDeleteThe overall setup for the blog is a constant news feed that provides links to the newest advertisements. You can pick an individual advertisement and then read more about that specific advertisement. Do you feel like this is a good way to promote new products? Personally I feel like this is a great way to appeal to a specific target audience. How can companies make their advertisements stand out more on this site? I feel like this website is a great way to see and express about the latest products and advertisements.
ReplyDeleteI like this blog site a lot. Never thought of the idea of a place that collected a bunch of advertisements, but obviously many people (outside of our English class) find them interesting to analyze also. For some reason I don't think the site has the most appealing set up, it looks almost cluttered in a way so I didn't draw a distinct purpose upon first glance. But as I look at the ads, it's apparent that they chose some pretty quality ones to put on the blog. The Viagra one is pretty clever. And also the cat food one under it. Does anyone else find themselves starting to pay attention to more details now when looking at the ad's on this page? It's so hard not to.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this blog! I agree with Anton though that it did seem a little cluttered, but the colors were very appealing and eye-catching. I liked all of the blog entries; I read/watched almost all of them on the opening page because they were interesting to me. I really liked the Vans ad for the documentary with Tony Alva, the ad was very dynamic and I couldn't stop watching. I think the blog has a lot of diversity when it comes to sources for ads; they cover from Burton to Red Cross.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that the layout of the site is pretty cluttered. And i also agree with Anton cause I do find myself noticing more in the adds I see even when I'm just out. I noticed that the most recent post to the blog when i posted this was a notice saying that they are changing the layout. What do you think they should change about it to make it more appealing?
ReplyDeleteI think they should make it easier to see each ad, maybe create a page that shows the 'most commented' or 'most viewed' ads, or something along those lines. That way people that are new to the page can see the best ads posted and gain the most information from those ads from the comments there. Overall I think the blog is great, but there definitely needs to be some change because of the clutter.
ReplyDeleteWho do you guys think is the target audience this blog site is reaching out to? (If it has one)I just wonder which demographic of people they know are most interested in looking at things like this.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the blog site is really cluttered. I also agree the links need to be cleaned up for easier accessibility to the top ads or those that received the most comments. If I had to take a guess I would say the target audience of the ad is younger people. Maybe people 18-30 as most of the ads seem to be focused on younger audiences. What are other people’s thoughts? I also noticed that it doesn’t seem that much new has been posted on the blog since I first saw it in Friday’s class. I wonder how much traffic this blog gets.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the ad is all that cluttered. I was able to easily enough find my way around the blog. I would definitely agree the blog is aimed towards younger people like ourselves. However, I think it could be a great resource for older people as well. Many of the ads could provide new create thoughts for business advertising. The live shop customer experience is a very high tech idea that I'm sure any phone company would love to have. It seems to me, that today exceptional customer service is becoming of more significance than the quick, fast food-like impersonal business ventures. I know I always enjoy having a real conversation with whoever is making my ice cream or cashing my checks even if it is about the weather. It's better than hearing "press one to talk to a real person."
ReplyDeleteI think that the idea of this blog is very interesting, the fact that they are gathering a wide variety of advertisements is neat. However, the layout of this blog could do with a little formatting. The actual articles are off center which throws me off a little. If it were me I would switch the column with the categories to the left hand side which would make the blog a little more pleasing to the eye. The color scheme isn't something that I would have to change the colors up a little. Light colors do well to attract attention only in the presence of colors that are different.
ReplyDeleteThe site Adverblog, in my opinion, has a lot of things going on, and it is not that organized. In many places the font used in this site is very small, and the background of the site is pretty blank too. A person like me would not be attracted to, or want to go through this site, if I was visiting it for the first time. It is a very unique idea and can be made much more interesting by making it more appealing and organized. I think that this site doesn't focus toward any certain age for audience but is more for the people who either like analyzing ads or are in the ad industry so that they can learn about the new ideas that are being used.
ReplyDeleteAs i went back to look at the website again today, i noticed that they have already changed the advertisements. This site must change frequently so that they can promote different ads in a certain time span. For instance, there are many technology advertisements this time instead of the advertisements like the Red Cross Fundraiser. I think that if they used a more unique background it would make the page stand out even more. The plain white background with a few black lines going through it doesnt appeal to me that much.If there were multiple colors being used i think it would make the page more interesting. Why do you think the creator of the page only uses green, pink, and black colors? Do these certain colors represent something?
ReplyDeleteI'm not really having too much of a problem with the organization that I see some other people complaining about. I mean in the margin it can be a bit cluttered at time, but other than that there seems to be a nice linear organization of writings. The main thing I would suggest is making less categories and makings broader ones. I find it pretty interesting that the blog covers a large variety of different countries when it comes to the advertisement. This could really help broaden the knowledge of advertisement rhetoric as it applies to different cultures. When it comes to the colors I really feel a sort of feminine vibe for some reason, more than likely its the pink header. At the same time, however, there are a good number of masculine colors that could perhaps make the blog more gender neutral. I really like the slanted lines as the background of the header, gives me a kind of younger feeling because it is not as straight line as you may expect from a very professional blog geared towards older individuals.
ReplyDeleteAt first glance, Adverblog does appear to be disorganized and cluttered, making me want to stop looking at the blog. It is a little bit overwhelming. Then, when noticing the details of the blog, I realized it is actually highly organized, with labeled columns, such as the one titled "Archives By Category". The bloggers could have made the writing larger and put less on the home page. To me, this blog is more-so for young adults. The layout is similar to that of MySpace, which is typically for teenagers and young adults. There are popular social networks such as Twitter and Facebook on the blog, which tend to steal the young adult's attention. I can see how AdverBlog could also appeal to other audiences through the various topics displayed on the blog. Facebook and Twitter are also becoming popular to people of many ages, including the older crowd. It is definitely a unique site. It is interesting how the site changes topics so frequently.
ReplyDeleteI would like to agree that the organization of the blog is a little bit cluttered. It actually took me a while to find out the paths and links to targets. The first word came to my mind was "simple", with the sight of almost only 3 colors to from the background and the guide tags for the whole website: green, pink and black. As blog maker Martina Zavagno talked in the "About", the blog formed because its a hobby of him to keep updated with the newest and interest ads. Unlike other blogs made in the purpose of making profits, the motivation of the blog determines the style, the decoration and the content in some extant. The arrangement of the whole website including the plain background, little embedded advertisements, variable ideas and comments toward ads and sharp-eyed interviews, fairly convey the idea of forming a non-profit, simple but informative blog by the blog maker. And I would guess the audiences can be really wide range, but mostly focused youth like us. The blog can probably provide a stage for people like us learning and exchange ideas, or to get older ones with ads-related jobs or interests for advertising industry more inspired and informed.
ReplyDeleteI can see where you would get the cluttered feeling from, with the whole right side of the page filled with text from networking websites. i also agree with taylor about the site always changing, it seems like a whole new page every time i visit it! i think that they "update" it so much so viewers never get bored and notice the new ads. I think they chose the plain white background because it focuses your attention on the actual blogs and their content. Since it is a blog website and not some photo/art gallery, i like how they kept it simple. I feel like they should include a "categories" tab in the top tool bar to help with the organization and navigating throughout the page to find what you're looking for.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with most, because I don't find the blog to be that cluttered. Maybe towards the top, but not when you scroll down. The thing that makes it, if at all, cluttered is the advertisements they have to have in order to run the site. I really like this website. It would be a great tool to use if you were a marketing student or even if you are already in industry. My favorite thing about this blog is the fact that you can look up archived postings by subject or month/year. There are so many topics to look at!! Although I don't agree with the category this ad was in: an ad comparing facebook to cars, and that was in the entrainment section. Interesting, but when i think entertainment, I think pop star and such, I guess the writers' view is just different. Overall, I really like the layout and content of this blog.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I find this blog to be failry spaced out once you scroll down from the initial ads and links for the website but I don't holdit against them since that's what most websites tend to do. For some reason, I just didn't like the way that the different ads looked on the page. I guess it sort of had an unfinished look. However, I did find it interesting that the ads were not only for the United States, but other countries as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is very cool how the viewer is abkles able to international advertisements. makes for a nice comparison of methods, and products.
